Sydney FC v Tottenham Hotspur

May 30, 2015 by Kevin Moody 1 Comment

English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed their first visit to Australia in 30 years to play Sydney FC in an exhibition match at ANZ Stadium. Spurs have committed to bringing the strongest available squad, so Sydney football fans are looking forward to catching the likes of Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris in action.

The match comes shortly after Sydney FC’s appearance in the A-League Grand Final, following their best season in five years. They were the great entertainers of the A-League in the second half of the season with goals flying in at both ends.

Spurs have also confirmed that they will take part in an open training session at ANZ Stadium on Friday 29th May at 16:00 as part of their preparations for the game.

A-League Semi-Final – Sydney FC v Adelaide United

May 9, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

Sydney FC will play an A-League semi-final for the first time in five years on Saturday when they host Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium. The build up has been dominated by a war of words between the clubs, setting up an epic clash to decide who goes through to the Grand Final against Melbourne Victory next Sunday in Melbourne.

The Sky Blues will need to shake off any lingering doubts about their home form, having lost five matches on their own turf despite going through the season unbeaten on the road. They have Marc Janko available again after the A-League’s top scorer missed the recent trip to Wellington through injury. Terry Antonis is also back in the squad, although he may need to settle for a place on the bench.

Adelaide arrive at Allianz Stadium with an impressive record in Sydney, including three wins from three previous matches against the Sky Blues at the venue this season. They have suffered a blow to their preparations with striker Bruce Djite failing to recover in time from a groin injury.

Spurs heading down under for Sydney FC test

April 22, 2015 by Kevin Moody

Tottenham Hotspur forward celebrates a goal

English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have arrived for their first visit to Australia in 30 years to play Sydney FC in an exhibition match at ANZ Stadium. Spurs have travelled with their strongest available squad, so Sydney football fans are looking forward to catching the likes of Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris in action.

Kane has lit up the Premier League this year with impressive displays and important goals, and he was recently named the PFA Young Player of the year. His stellar rise has seen him hit the net 30 times this season, including 21 in the Premier League and a goal less than two minutes into his England debut from the bench against Lithuania.

Kane warmed up for the Sydney game with a brace in midweek against a Malaysia XI. He is showing no signs of fatigue from a 50 game season that has seen his team once again qualify for the Europa League

The match comes a fortnight after Sydney FC’s appearance in the A-League Grand Final, following their best season in the last five years. They were the great entertainers of the A-League in the second half of the season with goals flying in at both ends.

The Sky Blues will look to provide a good test of their famous opponents. The match will also provide an ideal opportunity for highly rated young players like Terry Antonis and Alex Gersbach to show what they can do at a higher level. A good result for Sydney FC will represent another triumph for Australian Football following recent success for the Socceroos and Western Sydney Wanderers in Asia.

Spurs have also confirmed that they will take part in an open training session on Friday 29th May at 16:00 as part of their preparations for the game. Gates will open at 15:30, and immediately following the Spurs session Sydney FC will also train on the ANZ Stadium turf.

Return travel on public transport on game day is included with all pre-purchased tickets, including on Sydney Olympic Park Special Event Buses operating on the usual routes. Entertainment in the ANZ Stadium precinct begins at 16:00 with bars, food trucks and foot ball themed activities for fans to enjoy in the build up to kick-off.

Sydney FC look to finish home campaign on a high

April 3, 2015 by Kevin Moody

Sydney FC players celebrating

Sydney FC’s final home game of the regular A-League season is a vital clash with fellow high flyers Adelaide United. With three away games to follow the Sky Blues will look to take maximum points from this game to give themselves the best chance of playing at home in the finals series.

Despite being undefeated away from home Sydney FC have been beaten four times at Allianz Stadium this campaign. In fact they have recorded just two wins from their past eight games at Moore Park.

Sydney FC will have to make do without the services of Shane Smeltz after the forward was handed a three match ban for the red card he received in Wellington. However, top scorer Marc Janko is available after a goal scoring appearance for the Austrian national side.

Adelaide United’s form since the Asian Cup has been patchy, but they kept themselves in touch with the leaders with a hard fought win against Newcastle at the weekend. They are undefeated in three previous games with Sydney FC this season, including a convincing win at Allianz Stadium on Boxing Day.

The Reds will be without Argentine playmaker Marcello Carrusca through injury, but do welcome back Tarek Elrich and Eugene Galekovic from international duty.

Sydney FC v Melbourne City

March 20, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

Sydney FC can go to the top of the A-League ladder, temporarily at least, with a win against Melbourne City on Friday night. The Sky Blues are in record-breaking form, largely thanks to the incredible scoring streak from marquee man Marc Janko.

Last weekend Sydney FC edged an amazing nine goal thriller with Brisbane Roar, while Melbourne City also put four past Newcastle. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come on Friday, and another goal-fest for fans at Allianz Stadium.

In scoring a treble against the Roar, Janko also broke a number of records in the process. He has the chance on Friday to score in an eighth consecutive game, and also extend the new record for goals scored in an A-League season by a Sydney FC player.

As a club the Sky Blues also have some records in their sights. They are just one goal short of their highest number scored in a season, and they are just ten points away from matching their best ever season. That haul of 48 points was enough to secure the Premier’s Plate in 2009/10, and if they can better that figure this year then they will certainly be in contention once again.

Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar

March 15, 2015 by Kevin Moody 1 Comment

Sydney FC are back at home on Sunday following two road trip wins as defending A-League champions Brisbane Roar make their only visit to Allianz Stadium for the 2014/15 season. The Sky Blues are part of a top five who are only separated by a handful of points with seven rounds to go. With two home games in five days against opposition in the lower half of the table they will be looking to take a big step towards title contention.

Sydney FC striker Marc Janko was named this week as the PFA Player of the Month, and he can break an A-League record on Sunday by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive matches. It has been a timely run of form for the Austrian with his contract option for next season currently being negotiated, and should he get on the score sheet he will also equal the record set by Alessandro Del Piero for the most number of goals in a season by a Sydney FC player.

Records in sight for Janko as Sydney FC aim for title

The Sky Blues are part of a top five who are only separated by a handful of points with seven rounds to go. With two home games in five days against opposition in the lower half of the table they will be looking to take a big step towards title contention.

Graham Arnold will have something of a selection headache to deal with as key players return from injury and suspension. Terry Antonis gave a Man of the Match display against Newcastle in place of the suspended Mikael Tavares, while Matt Jurman and Sebastian Ryall would be unlucky to have to make way for Alex Gersbach and Jacques Faty.

Brisbane are unlikely to make up the gap to the top five, so will be concentrating on those below them in the race for the last remaining spot in the finals. They do have a good record in Sydney, and will be aware that the Sky Blues have conceded two or more goals in their last five games at Allianz Stadium.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Sydney FC

February 28, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

Another red hot atmosphere is in store at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday when Western Sydney Wanderers host Sydney FC in the ninth A-League Sydney Derby. After a loss and a draw in the two derby games earlier in the season the Wanderers will hope to brighten an otherwise frustrating campaign with a win over their local rivals.

Wanderers look for derby win to lift A-League campaign

Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC go into battle in the ninth A-League Sydney Derby on Saturday

As is always the case with derby games not too much should be read in to their respective positions on the ladder, and Sydney will be wary of a backlash from the last placed Wanderers. The Sky Blues have been in great form since the Asian Cup break – scoring three or more goals per game – and are looking to strengthen their claim for a place in the top four.

In particular the Wanderers need to contain Marc Janko, who as scored in each of those four games, as well as the potential for another goalscoring cameo from the bench by Shane Smeltz. Western Sydney’s task is made harder by an enforced defensive reshuffle thanks to suspensions for Mateo Poljak and Matthew Spiranovic.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold also has a decision to make on his defence. Rhyan Grant impressed as a substitute against the Mariners when he replaced the struggling Aaron Calver at right back, while Seb Ryall was unlucky to have been left out of the squad.

Despite being unbeaten in the last three derbies Sydney FC have not won at Pirtek Stadium since the very first encounter back in October 2012. The overall record between the two sides is three wins apiece and two draws, and another tight encounter should be expected on Saturday night.
