South Sydney Rabbitohs v St George Illawarra Dragons

May 11, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

If you were told at the start of the year that when this round nine clash came around one side would be on top of the ladder looking for a seventh straight win, while the other had lost three in a row, it would have come as no surprise. The odds on the Dragons being the benchmark side would have been pretty high, but on Monday night they have the chance to condemn the defending Premier’s to their fourth consecutive defeat.

Injuries are affecting both sides, with Glen Stewart for the Rabbitohs and Josh Dugan for the Dragons the latest additions to the casualty list. John Sutton will return for Souths after a broken jaw and will partner Luke Keary in the halves in the continued absence of Adam Reynolds. Tyson Frizell is back in the Dragons’ starting side after serving a suspension.

All pre-purchased tickets include return rail travel to ANZ Stadium.

Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs v South Sydney Rabbitohs

April 3, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

The Good Friday showdown between Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs has added significance this year as a Grand Final rematch. The Bulldogs are seeking revenge for their loss at the same venue last October.

With the Royal Easter Show taking place at the Sydney Showground there is plenty of family activities to enjoy pre-game. There will also be entertainment within ANZ Stadium itself with Timomatic performing live in the build up to kick off.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Wests Tigers

March 22, 2015 by Kevin Moody Leave a Comment

South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers have both opened their 2015 NRL campaigns with two wins from two games. The two sides go head to head on Sunday afternoon at ANZ Stadium, with the winning side a chance of being top of the ladder by the end of the round.

The Rabbitohs have impressed in their wins away to Brisbane and home to the Roosters. Against Brisbane they dominated the scoreboard and scored tries at will, whereas against the Roosters they had to fight their way back into the game and show they can still out muscle the best teams after the departures of Sam Burgess and Ben Te’o. However, they will be without captain John Sutton after he suffered a fractured jaw last weekend.

It is difficult to assess exactly where the Tigers are at after their opening games, as the Titans and Dragons were clearly struggling. You can only beat what is put in front of you, and the confidence gained from an unbeaten start under new coach Jason Taylor has given them a platform to build upon as they try to return to the final for the first time since 2011.

Sunday showdown for Souths and Roosters

Another tough battle is in store when South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters clash on Sunday

Historic rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters meet in a rare family friendly afternoon clash at ANZ Stadium. The two clubs have taken all of the major trophies between them over the past two seasons, and after significant departures during the close season they will look to display their credentials for the 2015 campaign.

Games between these two sides are always intense and Sunday will be no exception. The current balance of power lies with the Rabbitohs having beaten the Roosters in last year’s preliminary final, avenging defeats in Minor Premiership deciders in 2013 and 2014.

Questions had been asked of the Roosters regarding their ability to hold a place in the top four without the likes of Sonny Bill Williams and Anthony Minichiello. Those questions were answered in emphatic fashion with a dominant display against the Cowboys in Townsville.

South Sydney will also have been pleased with their display against the Bronco’s, following on from impressive outings at the Auckland 9’s and Club World Challenge. Already, after just one week of the season, there are many who are now tipping this as a potential Grand Final in October.

Rabbitohs fans are encouraged to arrive early at ANZ Stadium for the chance to get a photo with the NRL Premiership, World Club Challenge and Auckland 9’s trophies. Head to aisle 128 where the silverware will be on hand from 1.40pm until kick-off.

Souths and Roosters in rare finals clash

September 26, 2014 by Kevin Moody

Historic rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters face off for a spot in the NRL Grand Final

Historic rugby league rivals face off for a spot in the NRL Grand Final as South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters meet at ANZ Stadium on Friday night. The Rabbitohs are aiming to reach the Grand Final for the first time since 1971, while the Roosters are looking to become the first team to secure back to back Premierships since the early 90’s.

Unbelievably for one of Australia’s most intense sporting rivalries this is the first time since 1938 that these two clubs have met in a finals game. Whatever the result, Friday nights match will also be a farewell for some of the biggest names at both clubs. Roosters captain Anthony Minichiello is retiring at seasons end, while code hopper Sonny Bill Williams will return to rugby. For South Sydney, star forward Sam Burgess is also due to defect to union and return to the UK, while Ben Te’o will play in French rugby in 2015.

Souths have lost in the preliminary final in each of the last two seasons. Against the Bulldogs in 2012 they were never really in a winning position, and an injury to Adam Reynolds shortly before half time left them deflated. However, last year they were 14-0 up at half time but still lost out to Manly.

The outcome of this game lies squarely on the shoulders of the Rabbitohs. The Roosters will turn up and play well, about that there is little doubt. However, the question on the minds of many is whether the Rabbitohs will be fired up by a desire to bury that 40 year hoodoo, or will the weight of history and the pressure from losing at this stage for the past two years take its toll?

The Roosters have had a rollercoaster ride in the finals series so far. They entered as the form team in the NRL, with a seasons best winning streak carrying them to the Minor Premiership in the final round. However, they were the beaten by a field goal late on against the Panthers, before an almighty scare last week against North Queensland.

They had the game against the Cowboys won inside the opening half hour, but took their foot of the pedal with almost fatal consequences. This time around the field goal came at the right end of the field to save them from a shock exit.

Public transport to and from ANZ Stadium is included with all pre-purchased tickets to both NRL finals this weekend, including Sydney Olympic Park Special Event buses operating on the usual routes.
