A win for Sydney Roosters over their historic rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs in the final round will make it 12 in a row, a run that has seen them pull ahead as clear favourites to claim a second Premiership in three seasons. Following Brisbane’s loss to Melbourne on Thursday the Roosters simply need to avoid defeat by 67 points or more to secure a third straight NRL Minor Premiership, and they will be presented with the J.J. Giltinan Shield at the end of the game.
Both sides have injuries to key men, and while the Roosters have almost brushed aside the absences of the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Mitchell Pearce, the Rabbitohs have lost their way ever since Greg Inglis limped from the field against the Bulldogs. Souths will also have to contend without John Sutton and the suspended Isaac Luke.
Melbourne’s win over the Broncos also ended any hope that the Rabbitohs had of sneaking back into the top four. Defeat in the final round will also condemn them to an away match in an elimination final, with a trip to Melbourne to face the Storm a real possibility.
