2006 BDO World Champion and current PDC world no. 13 Jelle Klaasen has been confirmed to appear at the second installment of the Sydney Darts Exhibition Cup. The event will again take place in the heart of the city in the Grand Ballroom at 99 On York, and will see the top darts talent from Sydney leagues, groups and associations challenging the 2016 World Championships semi-finalist.
Jelle ‘The Cobra’ Klaasen became the youngest ever BDO World Champion when he secured the 2006 title at the age of 21, beating fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld in the final. The win was all the more remarkable considering Klaasen did not even have a BDO tour ranking going into the championships.
Klaasen defected to the PDC in 2007, starting out on the Pro Tour events circuit in order to boost his ranking. Victory in a Players Championship event at the end of the year saw him climb into the top 50 and secure qualification to the World Championships.
During his PDC career Klaasen has reached the semi-finals of the European Championships, the US Open and most recently the 2016 World Championships. The Cobra defeated 14-time champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in the third round, and by winning the subsequent quarter-final he became the first man to win his next match having eliminated Taylor from a PDC World Championships. Klaasen came up against defending champion Gary Anderson in the semi-final, who would eventually go on to secure back-to-back titles.
The 2015 Sydney Darts Exhibition Cup saw PDC world no. 23 Jamie ‘Jabba’ Caven remain unbeaten against the local challengers. Paul Cotton secured the trophy by beating Daniel Sim in the local final, before losing in the Grand Final against Caven.
