Dragons set to fire against wounded Bulldogs

The Dragons will hope their recent defensive improvements will help them emerge victorious against the Bulldogs on Sunday

Two NRL heavyweights go head to head at ANZ Stadium on Sunday afternoon when St George Illawarra Dragons play host to Canterbury Bulldogs. Recent history has favoured the Bulldogs in this fixture, but a combination of form and circumstance could see the balance of power shift to the Red V.

The Dragons have shown real signs of improvement in the last few rounds having notched three straight wins, and are able to name an unchanged side for this game. Their recent success has been built around solid defence, in fact the Dragons currently have the best defensive record in the NRL.

The Bulldogs have paid a heavy price for the dramatic events from Good Friday with Sam Kasiano, James Graham and David Klemmer all suspended for this match. Time Lafai and Brett Morris are also ruled out through injury.

Josh Reynolds returned from injury from the interchange bench last week, and will return to the starting side on Sunday. Moses Mbye will move to centre to make room for Reynolds.

There are plenty of pre-game activities to take advantage of at this family friendly afternoon game, including balloon artists, face painting and an inflatable obstacle course. The clubs also meet in the NYC with the on field action kicking off at 1.40pm.

Full season Bulldogs members have access to this game thanks to a reciprocal arrangement with the Dragons. All pre-purchased tickets – including members of both clubs – can take advantage of free return rail transport to ANZ Stadium.

Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs v South Sydney Rabbitohs

With the Royal Easter Show taking place at the Sydney Showground there is plenty of family activities to enjoy pre-game. There will also be entertainment within ANZ Stadium itself with Timomatic performing live in the build up to kick off.

Battle of the west for NRL Grand Final spot

September 27, 2014 by Kevin Moody

Canterbury Bulldogs fullback Sam Perrett fights for the ball with Penrith Panthers Hooker James Segeyaro

Margins will be tight between the Panthers and Bulldogs with a Grand Final spot up for grabs

Western Sydney pride is on the line between Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs on Saturday night with a place in the NRL Grand Final at stake. A couple of weeks ago many gave these teams more chance of meeting on Mad Monday celebrations than in a Preliminary final at ANZ Stadium, but both have defied the odds to be just 160 minutes away from the Premiership.

Despite beating the reigning champions and securing a week off, yet again the Panthers are considered underdogs in this match. You get the feeling that they could be 20 points up with a couple of minutes left in the Grand Final, and some would still insist they are premiership outsiders.

Despite not impressing pundits and bookmakers the Panthers have gone about their job admirably, and generally without any kind of major slump. This is despite having a terrible injury list, and having secured a week off for recovery leading up to this game could well be the deciding factor on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs on the other hand are the classic September bolter, peaking at the right time having drifted from consideration as a serious contender. They have spectacularly turned around their form by eliminating the two most consistent teams in the NRL over the past decade – Melbourne and Manly.

Des Hasler has been able to name an unchanged side after Josh Jackson and Michael Ennis escaped charges from the Manly game. James Graham has been a headline maker of late, but a quick look at the stats from last week show that fellow forwards Aiden Tolman and Tony Williams are delivering their fair share.

Jamie Soward again delivered for the Panthers in the Qualifying Final, proving he can be a big game match winner by slotting the field goal against the Roosters. The Panthers won both games against the Bulldogs in the regular season, but only by an aggregate total of eight points. It all points to another incredibly close game, so the likes of Soward, Matt Moylan and Trent Hodkinson may be called upon for late heroics.

Public transport to and from ANZ Stadium is included with all pre-purchased tickets to both NRL finals this weekend, including Sydney Olympic Park Special Event buses operating on the usual routes. There are also special “fan express” trains departing from Belmore and Penrith stations respectively and running  express to Olympic Park.

Bulldogs ready to take down Sea Eagles

September 20, 2014 by Kevin Moody

Hostilities will resume between Manly Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs in an Elimination Final at Allianz Stadium

The NRL Finals series has already thrown hope some surprise results, and another upset is on the cards in the second Elimination Final when Manly Sea Eagles host Canterbury Bulldogs at Allianz Stadium. Despite this being a match between teams second and seventh on the final ladder, this game is not expected to follow the usual script following contrasting fortunes last weekend for both sides.

As they have done over the final weeks of the 2014 season, Manly once again looked flat in their Qualifying Final against South Sydney. If the Sea Eagles are not focused from the first whistle tonight they could find themselves on the wrong end of a similarly one sided half time score as was the case against Souths.

Their forward pack has been depleted further by the suspension handed to Anthony Watmough for a dangerous throw. A reshuffled side will see Tom Symonds move to the back row and Dunamis Lui come into the starting lineup.

Last weekend against the Storm the Bulldogs put in their best performance since their previous trip to Melbourne a couple of months ago. When they ground out that 6-4 win in mid-season many predicted that the Bulldogs were heading for Minor Premiership contention. However things played out very differently in the remaining weeks of the regular season, and going into the finals from seventh on the ladder they were strongly tipped for elimination at the first hurdle.

While they may not have the overall game to outplay the best teams in the competition the Bulldogs have certainly got enough strength through the middle to overrun a depleted Manly side. The likes of James Graham and Tony Williams could run riot against a Sea Eagles side that was trampled over by Souths. The Bulldogs are forced into one change, with Reni Maitua replacing the unfortunate Pat O’Hanlon who suffered a terrible ankle injury against Melbourne.

The winner of this match progresses to a Preliminary final next Saturday night against Penrith Panthers.

Bulldogs and Souths gearing up for NRL finals

August 28, 2014 by Kevin Moody

A tough battle is in store at ANZ Stadium on Thursday between Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs

A tough battle is in store at ANZ Stadium on Thursday between Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs

As the 2014 NRL season enters its penultimate round there is plenty on the line for Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs. The traditional rivals are both set to feature in the finals series and will want to make a statement when they meet at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night.

A week ago the Rabbitohs were looking to keep the destiny of the Minor Premiership in their own hands. However, after Saturday’s defeat against the Cowboys they are now nervously looking over their shoulder hoping the flat display was just a blip.

Their spot in the top four is far from certain with tough games against the Bulldogs and Roosters to end the regular season. Having built momentum with five consecutive wins, the loss to the Cowboys has brought up questions of the Rabbitohs’ ability to go the distance.

George Burgess is back from suspension, but Ben Te’o is still unavailable. Burgess will need to be straight back to his best to help his brothers and teammates go toe to toe with the largest forward pack in the NRL.

The Bulldogs have turned their form around with two consecutive wins, and are once again considered a threat going into the finals series. They have had two extra days to recover from their last game, and arguably a half less of strenuous football action such was the ease with which they beat Wests Tigers.

Another close contest is in store with little to separate the two sides on paper. A Trent Hodkinson field goal for the Bulldogs was all that did so on Good Friday, and a similarly close scoreline is on the cards. A week of wet weather will have left the pitch at ANZ Stadium heavy under foot, but thankfully a dry night is forecast for those heading out to the game.
