The third Sydney FC home game of the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season brings the Sky Blues’ arch rivals Melbourne Victory to Allianz Stadium on Saturday night for the Big Blue. Clashes between these two clubs have often been epic and full of drama. The penalty shootout Grand Final win at Etihad Stadium in 2010 will live long in the memory of Sydney FC fans, as will several regular season encounters such as the 3-3 draw at Allianz Stadium that opened the following campaign.
Last season there was of course the heartbreaking 3-2 loss for Sydney FC, having been 2-0 up with 12 minutes to go. It was a night that seemed to sum up the rollercoaster nature of those opening weeks of the 2012/13 season – exhilarating highs followed swiftly by crushing lows. Ultimately it proved to be the end for Ian Crook’s short reign as coach, and after a slow start again this time around Frank Farina is under similar pressure.
After the loss to the Wanderers two weeks ago – and an unfortunate defeat in Perth – this is the perfect fixture for Sydney FC to get back on track. Another big crowd will be at Allianz Stadium, and with Kevin Muscat taking charge of the Victory for the first time away from home, The Cove will be sure to give him a “warm welcome”. Alessandro Del Piero and Pedj Bojic are fit again after calf injuries, and the absence of Del Piero in recent weeks has been telling for the Sky Blues – they have not scored in their past three matches.
Sydney FC have again come up with a three-game membership promotion to take advantage of. With three home games to be played in November, an adult General Admission pass starts from $61.00, and for a family of four it is just $160.00. This triple header kicks off with Saturday nights clash with Melbourne Victory, and is followed later in the month with games against Wellington Phoenix – whom the Sky Blues put seven goals past in the corresponding fixture last year – and Newcastle Jets.
Saturday 10th November, Allianz Stadium Moore Park 19:30
