The A-League Premiers Plate may already have been taken by Brisbane Roar, but second place – and a week off in the finals – is still up for grabs. Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers will try to stake their claims when they meet on Saturday in Gosford.
With only two points separating the sides with three rounds to go the Mariners will go above their rivals with a win, while a win for the Wanderers will make them firm favourites.
The Mariners will take confidence from their unbeaten home record against the Wanderers, as well as their famous Grand Final win at Allianz Stadium. The Mariners are also asking fans to acknowledge retiring former Socceroo Mile Sterjovski in what could be his final home match for the club.
Travelling Wanderers fans should ensure there is another sell out on their latest trip to Gosford. The Wanderers have had a sticky spell of late, but back to back victories in the Asian Champions League and a first win in three games in the A-League suggest they have the potential to come back to their best in time for the finals.
In fact, both sides have overcome adversity in the middle section of the season, with the Mariners having recovered well after enduring a club record losing sequence. Recent results suggest they have finally come to terms with the numerous departures and arrivals over the past year, and once again are in contention for major honours at the end of the season.
