Despite the Hyundai A-League season only being a month old Sunday’s round five encounter at Bluetongue Stadium between Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar already looks like a clash of potential title contenders. With a great history already existing between these two in terms of battling for silverware, the stage is set for another exciting chapter to be written in Gosford.
The Mariners have displayed great resilience in their opening four matches, even if they do not look to have yet hit full stride. They have three draws from those four games, including twice having come from two goals down.
Brisbane have impressed many this season, although they have perhaps benefited from playing against struggling teams like Sydney FC and Melbourne Heart. With the Mariners posing a far greater defensive barrier to Brisbane’s attack than those previously faced, they may find it hard to break through without their injured front man Beshart Berisha.
Michael McGlinchey and Storm Roux are away on international duty with New Zealand so Graham Arnold will be forced into at least two changes to his Mariners side. Last season’s top scorer in the A-League Daniel McBreen could make his return after finishing a loan spell in China.
