Sydney’s Autumn Racing calendar reaches its pinnacle on Saturday with Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick. A quality card of races full of in-form runners is headlined by the world’s richest 2000m turf race, the $4 million Group 1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
After a 48-hour postponement due to heavy rain Day 1 finally went ahead on Easter Monday and produced a great day of racing action. With the weather looking much better this week another great day is in store for Day 2.
The feature race will see arguably the strongest field this Autumn go head to head, with 10 Group 1 winners in the 13 horse field. Local horse Contributor will take on the class field of international runners – including three time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadauex – looking to secure the coveted treble of Chipping Norton Stakes, Ranvet Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes wins.
There are three other Group 1 races worth $1m or more, including the $1.6m Sydney Cup. Hartnell is the clear favourite for the Sydney Cup, and looks set to be the shortest priced favourite for this race since 1999. Protectionist could become just the fifth horse in history to win both the Melbourne Cup and Sydney Cup in the same season.
Be sure to also check out the exhibition in the member’s area celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Sydney Cup. The Myer Fashions on the Field competition is also back for day 2, and other attractions include the Clinique Pamper Lounge, Chandon Pop-Up Bar and the Little Sydney gourmet food precinct.
