The 2014 Sydney Spring Carnival kicks off on Saturday with the De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Day at Rosehill Gardens. Alongside the racing entertainment on the day there are numerous Ladies Day themed attractions, including a fashion competition, pamper lounge and massage booth.
The Group 1 feature race is the 1400m Golden Rose the only $1million race in Sydney this spring. Overall there are eight races throughout the day, and many of the support races have previous Group 1 winners in the field. Dry conditions are forecast leading up to race day, but heavy rain in Sydney over the past month means a dead track is still likely at Rosehill.
Early betting for the Golden Rose had Hallowed Crown and Bring Me The Maid rated neck and neck, although the former has drifted slightly since an unfavourable barrier draw. Outside of the two favourites the Gai Waterhouse trained Almalad could be one to watch if the track is drier than expected, and having also drawn the ideal barrier five.
Those travelling by public transport can take advantage of free shuttle buses departing from Parramatta rail station and ferry wharf. The Sydney Spring Carnival runs until October 18th, with events on each Saturday alternating between Rosehill and Royal Randwick.
