Greater Western Sydney Giants return home to Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to get their 2014 AFL season back on track after some disappointing recent results. Their opponents are Richmond Tigers, who arrive in Sydney under just as much pressure as their hosts.
The Giants will go into this game with a number of players available again after injury. Jeremy Cameron, Adam Treloar and Curtly Hampton all missed the trip to Perth last week, while Shane Mumford makes his first appearance since round three after undergoing knee surgery. The good news on the injury front is tempered by the loss of Nick Haynes who suffered a broken ankle against West Coast. Toby Greene will also miss out as he serves the first of a club imposed five match suspension.
Saturday’s game poses a great chance for the Giants to arrest their recent form slump and return to the improved showings they displayed early in the 2014 campaign. With Richmond sitting immediately above them on the ladder, GWS will be desperate to show how far they have come in comparison to the side that was thrashed by 120 points by the Tigers in round 22 last year.
The Tigers have been very disappointing so far this season and already appear to be a long way short of contending for the finals spot that was expected of them. Like the Giants, Richmond have had their off-field distraction this week thanks to Jack Riewoldt’s ill-advised comments in the media, however he has been retained in the side to run out at Spotless Stadium.
