Newly crowned English Premier League champions Chelsea have arrived in Sydney to take on Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium. It is the London club’s first visit to Sydney in more than 40 years, fresh from lifting the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in a decade.
Eden Hazard has swept the player of the years awards in England and Sydney fans will relish the opportunity to see the EPL’s best in action. Chelsea fans will also have the chance to farewell Didier Drogba after the recent announcement that the Ivory Coast striker will leave the club at the end of the season.
The English champions are bringing their best available squad, with only Cesc Fabregas missing out with a broken nose. Top scorer Diego Costa will play after overcoming his own injury problems, and coach Jose Mourinho has already confirmed Costa in the starting lineup alongside Hazard and Loic Remy.
Sydney FC will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of their loss in the A-League Grand Final, and give a good account of themselves against the English league champions. The Sky Blues impressed in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on the weekend, and will feel they should have taken at least one of the chances they created.
The match will bring to a close a huge week of sport at ANZ Stadium, following the State of Origin opener and the visit of Spurs. With extra seating installed for this game the attendance is expected to be a record for the venue in its current configuration.
